In our first pre-season friendly on Saturday under new captain Scott Thomas, we went down 1-0 at Step 5 Cockfosters under a cloudless sky though the result should be put into context, writes andrew warshaw.

Our two new defenders, Rian Bray and Charley O’Keefe, both started the game while a third recruit,  midfielder Emmanuel Maja, was introduced for the second half.

After having much the better of the first 45 minutes on a distinctly grassy pitch, Andy changed virtually the entire line-up for the second period, experimenting with a spate of triallists to see what they could do.

We ultimately succumbed to a 53^rd-minute wonder striker from Yacine Aiba that would have beaten any goalkeeper in the world.

Despite the result, more importantly it was an early exercise in squad preparation  as we build towards the start of the league campaign in mid-August
