Another good pre-season workout at Parkside

A bright and breezy day on the 3g surface at Parkside, home of Aveley FC, produced another positive step towards Town’s 2019/20 season opener.

With a number of absences through holiday or injury, Town’s starting line up was: Nathan McDonald, Jon Muleba, Joe Payne, Scott Thomas, Marc Weatherstone, Dan Rumens, Lewis Taaffe, Ryan Blackman, A Trialist, Sam Bantick, James Potton.

After 2 minutes, Sam Bantick’s near post right-foot effort from James Potton’s pass was shepherded wide by Grays keeper Danny Sambridge.

After 8 minutes, Nathan McDonald dived to save at the feet of Emmanuel Ogunrinde after a good break down the left by Joao Carlos.

On 10 minutes, Steve King’s header from a free-kick on the right flew over the top.

On 16 minutes, Nathan McDonald produced a fingertip save to keep out George Doyle’s powerful shot.

Ryan Blackman fired way over on 22 minutes and, on the half hour mark, after Athletic’s Stan Muguo had lost possession in the middle of the park, a Bantick header from close range following a cross from the right flew off target.

HT: 0-0

There were a number of substitutions from both sides at half time and throughout the second half. Apart from a number of youthful trialists, Town fielded some familiar faces in Sam Hatton, Mario Noto, Junior Mubiayi and Brad Empson.

Sambridge saved at the feet of Bantick early soon after the break to keep the scores level, and then the home keeper pushed a trilaist’s effort round the post.

The winner arrived on 76 minutes when some good work from Bantick on the right ended with a low cross which was turned in by a trialist.
