A frustrating day for Town saw early promise dissipate in the autumn sun as Lewes put in a 13 minute burst to seal this game.
Town looked good in the early stages but will regret not being more clinical. Mo Faal did well to intercept a poor clearance but could not beat the keeper for the early lead. The resulting corner saw Jeremiah Gyebi narrowly fail to divert the ball into the empty net as Lewes rode their luck. But it was the home side who struck first. A corner to the back post found Bradley Pritchard unmarked and he calmly drilled the ball across the goal into the top corner.
If Town were unsettled by this it did not show as they set about putting pressure on the Lewes goal again, but not for long. A clearance down the middle from Lewes keeper Carey caught Rian Bray off balance and Joe Taylor was able to sweep the ball over the oncoming McDonald for the second. The frustrations mounted further when shortly after a free kick on the right from Taylor Maloney beat McDonald giving the Rooks a comprehensive lead going into half time.
Town needed a good start to the second half and it seemed to come when Faal latched onto a long throw on the right to slot past the keeper, but when Lewes re-established their three goal lead minutes later you knew it would not be Town’s day. A good run in from the right saw Killian Colombie beat McDonald at the post while holding off his marker.
Lewes could have done more damage to Town’s confidence as the second half wound down, but substitutions from both sides saw the game become a little disjointed. In truth, Lewes had already done their days work, and Town were just not able to re-establish their early poise or threaten the Lewes goal. A quick response is now needed for Tuesday night’s game against Haringey Borough.
